Mallikarjun Kharge (born July 21, 1942) is a veteran Indian politician and a key leader of the Indian National Congress (INC). Representing Karnataka, he has been serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha since February 16, 2021. Known for his steadfast leadership and extensive legislative experience, Kharge has held several crucial positions in Indian politics, including Minister of Railways and Minister of Labour and Employment in the Union Government.

Early Life and Education

Born in Varawatti village, Bhalki Taluk, Bidar district of Karnataka, Mallikarjun Kharge hails from a humble background. His parents, Mapanna Kharge and Sabavva, emphasized the value of education early on. Kharge completed his schooling at Nutan Vidyalaya, Gulbarga, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Government College, Gulbarga, and later obtained a Law degree from Seth Shankarlal Lahoti Law College. Before stepping into politics, he began his professional life as a lawyer under Justice Shivraj Patil, advocating for labor unions and workers’ rights.

Family Life

Kharge married Smt. Radhabai on May 13, 1968, and the couple has been blessed with two daughters and three sons. Despite his demanding political career, Kharge is known for his deep-rooted family values and commitment to social causes.

Political Beginnings

Mallikarjun Kharge’s entry into politics began during his college days when he served as the General Secretary of the Students’ Union at Government College, Gulbarga. His dedication to public service saw him become the legal advisor to the MSK Mills Employees’ Union in 1969. The same year, he joined the Indian National Congress and soon became President of the Gulbarga City Congress Committee, marking the beginning of his long and impactful political career.

Rise in Karnataka Politics

Kharge’s political ascent started in 1972 when he was first elected as Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Gurmitkal constituency. Over the next several decades, he continued to win elections, setting a remarkable record of ten consecutive victories (nine as MLA and one as MP).
Throughout his tenure, Kharge held several key ministerial portfolios, including Primary Education, Rural Development, Revenue, Industries, and Home Affairs. His leadership was pivotal in implementing land reforms, improving rural governance, and empowering marginalized communities.

As Minister for Primary Education (1976), Kharge oversaw the recruitment of thousands of SC/ST teachers, ensuring inclusive representation in education. Later, as Revenue Minister under Gundu Rao’s cabinet, he facilitated land rights for landless farmers, accelerating Karnataka’s agrarian reforms.

Leadership Roles in State Politics

From Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly to President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), Kharge played a central role in strengthening the Congress party in the state. His strategic leadership during the 2008 Assembly elections and grassroots connect helped revive Congress’s rural base.

Journey to National Politics

In 2009, Kharge made his debut in national politics, winning the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency. He was re-elected in 2014, subsequently becoming the Leader of the Congress Party in Lok Sabha (2014–2019). During his tenure, he earned respect across party lines for his articulate speeches, policy insights, and commitment to democratic values.

Although he lost the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Kharge’s political influence remained undiminished. He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in 2020, continuing his decades-long service to the nation.

On February 12, 2021, Mallikarjun Kharge was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, a position he held until October 1, 2022, when he stepped down to contest for the INC Presidential election.
