Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Against E20 Ethanol Fuel

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL challenging the Centre’s plan to roll out E20 fuel — petrol blended with 20% ethanol — by 2025-26. The plea had sought ethanol-free petrol for vehicles manufactured before 2023, citing reduced efficiency and engine issues.
A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai rejected the plea after Attorney General R Venkataramani argued E20 would cut pollution, save on oil imports, boost sugarcane farmers’ income and strengthen the rural economy. “Will someone from outside dictate what kind of fuel India should use?” he asked.
The government said ethanol blending has already touched 20% this year, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel dependence. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said the move has lowered vehicular pollution and will improve ride quality.
