Congress appoints Shashi Tharoor as co-chairman of Kerala campaign committee ahead of Assembly elections, signalling unity as party prepares to challenge the Left.

The Congress has unveiled its organisational blueprint for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, naming senior leader Ramesh Chennithala as chairman and Shashi Tharoor as co-chairman of the party’s campaign committee. The move comes shortly after Tharoor met party president Mallikarjun Kharge and former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, a meeting he later described as cordial and constructive.

According to a party statement, Kharge has approved the formation of both the campaign committee and the manifesto committee for the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. Tharoor’s inclusion in a prominent role signals a consolidation within the state unit, especially after recent reports of internal friction.

The campaign committee will be convened by MP Shafi Parambil, with several party leaders named as members. Meanwhile, MP Benny Behanan will head the manifesto committee, with Kodikkunnil Suresh as co-chairman.

The development is politically significant as the Congress prepares to challenge the ruling Left Front after a decade in opposition. Party insiders believe presenting a united front will be critical in a tightly contested electoral landscape. Tharoor’s national visibility and appeal among urban voters could bolster the party’s messaging in key constituencies.

With polls expected in April–May, the coming weeks will test whether this renewed coordination translates into grassroots momentum.
