New Delhi: The Supreme Court will on Monday resume hearing petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, a process that has triggered sharp political debates ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi is hearing pleas filed by the RJD and other parties against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) directive for SIR. The court had earlier refused to extend the September 1 deadline for filing claims and objections but noted that submissions made until the last date of nominations would still be considered.

The court also asked the Bihar State Legal Services Authority to deploy para-legal volunteers to assist voters and parties in filing online claims or corrections.

Meanwhile, sources said the ECI is exploring the possibility of carrying out SIR across the country. A meeting of state Chief Electoral Officers with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other senior officials is scheduled for September 10 in Delhi.
