Rahul Gandhi Leads Opposition Protest Over Galwan Clash Remarks
Rahul Gandhi led Opposition leaders in chanting a phrase attributed to PM Modi from a Galwan-linked memoir, sparking fresh protests in Parliament alongside criticism of the US–India trade deal.
New Delhi: Parliament witnessed fresh turbulence on Friday as Opposition leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest at the Makar Dwar, repeatedly chanting “Jo uchit samjho, wahi karo” in a renewed attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The slogan, drawn from a memoir by former Army chief M. M. Naravane, refers to a phrase allegedly used by the Prime Minister during a meeting with military leadership following the 2020 Galwan clash. The Opposition claimed the remark reflected an attempt to deflect political accountability after the border confrontation in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives.
Alongside the Galwan issue, Opposition MPs also used the protest to criticise the recently announced India–US trade agreement, arguing that it could hurt farmers and was pushed through without adequate parliamentary scrutiny. They accused the government of bypassing debate on matters of national importance.
The ruling side rejected the allegations, maintaining that the phrase cited by the Opposition signified trust in the armed forces’ professional judgment rather than abdication of responsibility. Government leaders also accused the Opposition of deliberately disrupting proceedings and stalling legislative business.
With tempers flaring, both Houses were adjourned for the day and will reconvene on Monday.
Analysis: The episode highlights how unresolved questions around national security and trade policy are increasingly colliding on the parliamentary floor. As slogans replace substantive debate, prolonged disruptions risk hardening political positions while limiting space for detailed scrutiny of sensitive issues.
