PM Modi Says ‘Stop Drama and Perform’, Opposition Reacts Strongly
PM Modi urges Opposition to “deliver, not do drama” following Bihar poll loss. As BJP champions election victory, critics question the government's approach ahead of a contentious Winter Session.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the opening of the Winter Session of Parliament, took a pointed jab at Opposition parties, urging them to “perform in Parliament instead of staging drama.” Referring to their recent electoral setback in Bihar, he suggested that the Opposition should not be “unsettled by the results” and even offered “tips” on how they could improve their political strategy.
The BJP-led NDA registered a sweeping victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, claiming 202 out of 243 seats. Modi praised the strong voter turnout—especially among women—calling it a testament to the strength of Indian democracy. At the same time, he cautioned his own alliance to ensure that victory does not lead to arrogance.
Opposition leaders, however, are gearing up for a combative session. Their primary demand is a full debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls—a matter they argue impacts the integrity of the democratic process. Despite three high-level meetings on Sunday, including an all-party meet chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the government has not committed to a debate.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju attempted to smooth tensions, stating that no leader openly threatened to disrupt the House over SIR, and promised the government would engage constructively.
Analysis: While the Prime Minister’s comments appear to urge productivity, they may also be seen as dismissive of Opposition concerns on SIR—an issue several parties claim affects fair electoral conduct. With the government focusing on introducing 10 new bills and sidestepping the SIR debate, friction is likely to deepen. Politically, Modi’s remarks set the tone for a session where control of narrative may matter as much as the legislation itself.
