Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Mizoram’s 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang rail link, three new trains, and road and education projects worth ₹9,000 crore, boosting connectivity and development.

Aizawl: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a 51.38-km stretch that brings Mizoram’s capital Aizawl onto India’s railway map for the first time. Alongside, he launched projects worth over ₹9,000 crore aimed at improving road connectivity, infrastructure, and education in the state.

The new rail network makes Aizawl the fourth northeastern capital connected by train after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. Modi also flagged off three trains: the Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express (weekly), the Kolkata–Sairang Express (tri-weekly), and the Guwahati–Sairang Express (daily).

Despite weather disruptions that prevented him from addressing the gathering in person, the Prime Minister delivered a virtual message, calling the moment “historic for Mizoram and for India.” He praised the engineers and workers who completed the difficult project in challenging terrain, adding that the link would transform lives by opening markets, education, and healthcare access.

In addition to rail projects, Modi laid foundations for new road works such as the Aizawl Bypass, Thenzawl–Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn–Rongura Road, expected to cut travel time by over an hour for people in southern districts. He also inaugurated an Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam, which will serve tribal students with improved facilities and reduce dropout rates.

The railway line is expected to give Mizoram farmers and entrepreneurs wider market access, while better roads will boost tourism and reduce isolation of remote districts.

Citizens can look forward to faster travel options, cheaper goods transport, and new opportunities in hospitality and allied sectors.
