BJP leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy moves Telangana High Court against Speaker’s decision that MLA Danam Nagender did not switch parties.

A fresh legal challenge has emerged in Telangana over the political status of Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, with a petition filed in the High Court questioning the Assembly Speaker’s recent ruling.

The Speaker, Gaddam Prasad Kumar, had earlier concluded that Nagender had not changed his party affiliation. However, BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy has now approached the court seeking to set aside that decision.

In his plea, Reddy argued that Nagender’s actions—particularly his participation as a Congress candidate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections—raise questions about his continued status as an MLA under his original party. The petition also seeks directions for recovery of the salary drawn by Nagender in his legislative role.

The Telangana High Court is expected to take up the matter on Monday, with the case likely to attract political attention given its implications for party discipline and legislative norms.

Legal experts note that disputes involving party affiliation and Speaker rulings often test constitutional boundaries, especially around anti-defection provisions. The outcome could set a precedent for similar cases in the state.
