Modi meets Xi in first China visit in 7 years; talks focus on trade, stability

Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his first visit to China in seven years. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, focused on normalising strained ties and strengthening economic cooperation.
Both leaders discussed measures such as joint maintenance of peace along the contested border, reopening of border trade, and early resumption of direct flights. Modi stressed that stable and predictable India-China relations are vital for regional peace and global economic stability, especially amid global trade tensions.
The visit follows Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent trip to India, where both nations agreed to take steps towards a “stable, cooperative and forward-looking” partnership after ties were hit by the 2020 Galwan clashes.
