Four killed, 30 injured as Ladakh protests over statehood and Sixth Schedule turn violent in Leh. Curfew imposed under BNSS.

Violence Erupts in Ladakh Over Statehood Demand

Leh, Ladakh – Four people were killed and at least 30 injured in violent clashes on September 24 as protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh turned deadly. The district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), banning gatherings of five or more people.

The protests were led by the youth wing of the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) following the hospitalization of two hunger strikers. A BJP office and several vehicles were set on fire, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Prohibitory Orders and Response

Leh District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk issued the ban citing public safety concerns. No rallies, processions, or loudspeaker use are allowed without official permission.

Amid the violence, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk called off his 15-day hunger strike, urging youth to stop the unrest. “Violence only harms our cause,” he said.

What’s Behind the Protest?

Protesters are demanding inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, which offers autonomy and protections for tribal regions. Talks with the Centre are scheduled for October 6, with former MP Thupstan Chhewang returning to lead the LAB delegation.
