India Supports UN Resolution Endorsing Two-State Solution for Palestine
India joined 142 nations at the UN General Assembly in backing the New York Declaration, calling for a sovereign Palestinian state and an end to the Gaza war
United Nations: India voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution endorsing the New York Declaration that pushes for a peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue through a two-state solution. The motion, introduced by France, passed with 142 votes in favour, 10 against, and 12 abstentions. Nations opposing included the US, Israel, Argentina, and Hungary.
The declaration—drafted at a high-level UN conference co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia in July—urges Israel to make a clear public commitment to the creation of a sovereign, viable Palestinian state. It further calls for an immediate end to settlement expansion, land grabs, and violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.
Leaders behind the declaration stressed that Gaza must be recognized as an integral part of Palestine, unified with the West Bank, and free from occupation or forced displacement. The text also reaffirmed support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
“Without concrete steps and strong international guarantees, regional peace will remain out of reach,” the declaration warned, highlighting the devastating human toll of the Gaza conflict.
India’s vote aligns it with the majority of the international community calling for a negotiated peace, while balancing its strategic ties with both Israel and the Arab world.
Analysts believe the resolution, though symbolic, increases diplomatic pressure on Israel and could shape future negotiations.
