Jupally Krishna Rao Rejects Rajgopal Reddy’s Liquor Restrictions in Munugode

Hyderabad: Telangana Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao has dismissed Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy’s directive limiting wine shop operations to 4 p.m.–9 p.m., stating that liquor regulations apply uniformly across the state and no constituency enjoys special exemptions.

The clarification followed Reddy’s viral video in which he was seen instructing officials to enforce reduced operating hours and ban belt shops in Munugode, citing public health concerns. “Public welfare is my top priority. I don’t care about business losses,” the Congress MLA was heard saying.

Party sources indicated that the Telangana Congress leadership is preparing to send a report to the high command regarding Reddy’s unilateral stance. The MLA has also alleged that several wine shops operate within residential areas and accused vendors of forming syndicates to inflate prices — issues he urged the government to address through a stricter excise policy.

Analysis: Reddy’s move reflects growing tension between public health advocacy and administrative boundaries within the Congress-led state government. While his concerns over illicit liquor and inflated prices resonate locally, bypassing official channels may fuel internal friction. The state’s uniform excise policy, however, leaves little room for constituency-level exceptions — a reminder that reform requires coordination, not unilateral action.
