DMK Leader’s Controversial Remark on PM Modi Triggers Row; BJP Demands Arrest
A video from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, showing DMK South District Secretary J Jeyabalan allegedly referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “Narakasura” and calling for his “elimination,” has ignited a political storm. The speech, reportedly delivered on November 11 during a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll, has gone viral across social media platforms.
In the clip, the DMK leader is heard claiming that only by removing such a “demon” can Tamil Nadu progress. The statement drew sharp criticism from BJP Tamil Nadu President Nainar Nagendran, who called it a direct threat to the Prime Minister and questioned the law and order situation in the state. He also criticised leaders present on stage, including MP Rani Srikumar and MLA E Raja, for not intervening.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya shared the video, alleging that such remarks reflect a culture of extremism under the DMK administration.
DMK Organisational Secretary R S Bharathi responded cautiously, stating the party would review the full video to understand the context before deciding on any action. “We are occupied with SIR protests at the moment but will look into it soon,” he said.
Analysis Political observers note that while heated rhetoric is not new during protests, invoking violence against a constitutional head sets a dangerous precedent. Such comments risk further polarisation and could distract from core electoral issues. Experts believe DMK leadership will likely distance itself from the remark to avoid escalation ahead of upcoming elections.
The incident underscores the growing sensitivity around political discourse and highlights the need for parties to enforce restraint among their grassroots leaders.
