Congress wins 1,536 wards in Telangana municipal elections, securing control of 83 municipalities, while BJP gains ground and BRS faces setbacks.

The Congress party has secured a commanding victory in Telangana’s municipal elections, winning 1,536 wards out of nearly 3,000 across 123 urban local bodies in the February 11 polls. The results handed the ruling party clear control of 83 municipalities, along with majorities in three municipal corporations, including Mancherial and Nalgonda.

While Congress emerged as the primary beneficiary, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered notable gains. The party won 334 wards, becoming the single largest party in Karimnagar and Nizamabad. In Karimnagar, BJP secured the mayoral post with support from independent councillors, a development Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar described as a significant breakthrough.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which had performed strongly in previous civic elections, secured 779 wards, placing it behind Congress and reflecting a sharp decline compared to its 2020 position.

Senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, hailed the outcome as a public endorsement of the party’s governance agenda, highlighting welfare initiatives aimed at farmers, youth and women.

Political observers suggest the results underline a shift in urban voter sentiment, with Congress consolidating its position at the grassroots level. At the same time, BJP’s performance in select corporations signals an expanding footprint, particularly in urban pockets.

With local leadership structures now set to take shape, attention will turn to how the ruling party translates this electoral momentum into administrative delivery.
