Andhra Pradesh Braces for Montha Cyclone, CM Naidu Issues Red Alert

Amaravati: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that the Montha cyclone is gaining strength over the Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh has been placed on high alert. The weather system, currently a depression, is projected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28, potentially making landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials across coastal districts to remain on constant watch. During a teleconference with district collectors and senior officers, Naidu emphasized preparedness and urged authorities to prioritize the safety of residents in vulnerable regions. “Officials must stay vigilant as the Montha cyclone is expected to impact the state from October 26 to 29,” he cautioned.

The IMD forecast indicates wind speeds could reach 110 kmph, with rainfall exceeding 100 mm in several parts of the state. Coastal regions from Srikakulam to Tirupati are expected to bear the brunt of the storm.

Naidu instructed departments to ensure uninterrupted water, electricity, and communication services while keeping NDRF and SDRF teams on standby. Evacuations from low-lying areas, temporary school closures, and reservoir monitoring were among the key directives issued to minimize risk.

Analysis: With cyclones becoming a recurring challenge along Andhra’s coastline, early coordination between departments remains critical. The CM’s proactive stance suggests lessons from past disasters have not been forgotten. Residents are advised to stay updated through official channels and avoid coastal movement during the warning period. Quick response and local cooperation will determine how effectively the state weathers Montha’s impact.
